Maine Coon
The Maine Coon cat originated from Maine in the USA. They were popularly used as a mouser, farm cat, and ship's cat during the early 19th century. Maine Coon's are the largest breed of cat, with one even holding the record for the world's longest house cat.
Personality
Maine Coon cats are affectionate, playful, intelligent, and very friendly with strangers, kids and other animals. They are often described as almost dog-like in their behaviours.
Size
Maine Coon cats are the largest breed of cat. Males weigh from 5.9-8.2 kg, and females weight from 3.6-5.4 kg. They usually grow to 25-40cm in height 48-81cm in length.
Care
Maine Coon cats have an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years. They can suffer from several different health problems, so it is important to get them checked at the vet if you notice any abnormal behaviour. Maine Coon's may suffer from hip dysplasia, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, polycystic kidney disease, and spinal muscular atrophy. Maine Coon coats are also quite easy to take care of, and only require brushing twice a week.
